From the verbs permít, tormént, etc., we derive the nouns pérmit, tórment in the next transformational cycle by the substantive rule, the stress on the second syllable being automatically weakened to secondary. The rule of stress adjustment gives primary-tertiary as the stress sequence in these cases. The second syllable does not reduce to , since it is protected by secondary stress at the stage at which the rule of vowel-reduction applies.
